James Gorney knows what it’s like to be the new guy in a room.
“You don’t want to show up and not know anyone,” said Gorney, a civil attorney based in La Plata. “We introduce them to everybody, get people to feel like they belong.”
It’s that networking attitude, the desire to connect with people and build relationships, that helped the Charles County Chamber of Commerce name Gorney and his wife Judi 2014 Outstanding Chamber Person of the Year.
“They are outstanding,” said Sue Greer, chairwoman of the chamber’s board of directors. “They believe in the mission of the chamber and they invest a lot of time and energy in that mission.”

Following a show-and-go start at American Legion Stanley Cochrane Post 16 from 8-9 a.m., riders have the option of following a 62.1-mile (100-kilometer) or 23.1-mile (37-kilometer) route. Both routes pass some of Crisfield's most picturesque and historic areas, including the rustic crab shanties of Jenkins Creek. Riders also will have the chance to see a working watermen's community in action at the Small Boat Harbor. The Crisfield Heritage Foundation offers a look at the workshop of famed decoy carvers Lem and Steve Ward for all participants.
